What might be even more surprising to those outside of the truck collecting community is that this model, like many other truck models, is just 1:50 scale.
So how has a Papua New Guinea based transport company liveried truck become the high watermark for model values in Australia?
The Mapai model (Z01390) was initially kept under wraps until a collector in New Zealand, reportedly connected to Mapai Transport, shared photos of the model on online. This sparked immediate curiosity and demand, prompting a wave of inquiries to Drake Collectibles. Following this, Drake released some details, but the interest only grew as collectors began contacting Mapai Transport directly, eager to purchase a model—a demand that continues to this day.
Originally diecast truck models were created as marketing tools, eventually evolving into collectible items. Jacob Luke, the late founder of Mapai Transport saw their value in strengthening customer relationships and as rewards for employees. Many other companies use these models similarly.
Only 200 Mapai models were produced, but other privately-commissioned models exist in even smaller numbers, including quantities of 100, 48, and 24. It's reasonable to speculate that these ultra-rare models would surpass the Mapai model in value if ever offered for sale, due to their scarcity. Details of these releases have never been disclosed to the public as these companies have operations to run and would be overwhelmed with collector enquiries for their models.
There are potentially some high-end car models from boutique manufacturers that could challenge the Mapai truck's top spot but for two years now, nothing - as reported to Diecast Detective - has come within $2,000 of it.
